PACE President Petra Bayr, reacting to the result of the mid-term elections in the United States, made the following statement today:
“Americans have spoken – and democracy has worked. A strong turnout, a clear result, checks and balances doing their job.
I hope the new Congress will stand firmly with Ukraine against Russia’s war of aggression. Ukraine's fight is our common fight for liberty and justice – the values American democracy has embodied for 250 years.
And I hope this vote re-opens the door to multilateralism. No country, however powerful, can solve today's crises alone – from shrinking trust in institutions and the climate catastrophe to the cost of living and polarised societies. PACE stands ready to work with colleagues from the US Congress.
Democracy is not a spectator sport. Yesterday, America played.”
The US holds observer status with the Council of Europe.
