PACE President Lluís Maria de Puig welcomed the co-operation agreement signed today between the Assembly and the Latin-American Parliament (Parlatino), following similar agreements with the Assembly of the CIS and the Pan-African Parliament.
The aims of this agreement are to structure and expand the co-operation between the two bodies and promote the shared values of democracy, the rule of law and defence of human rights.
Mr de Puig, who is attending the Parlatino’s ordinary session in Panama (5-6 December), referred in his statement to certain issues of mutual interest, including in particular the protection of citizens’ rights during the current financial crisis, which could be the subject of a current affairs debate at the Assembly’s winter session (26-30 January 2009).
