The use of force against demonstrators by the Chinese regime must be strongly condemned, said Göran Lindblad

Strasbourg, 07.07.2009 – “The use of force against demonstrators by China’s communist regime must be strongly condemned by the international community,” said Göran Lindblad (Sweden, EPP/CD), Chair of the Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), referring to the unrest in the Chinese province of Xinjiang, which over the last two days has resulted in at least 156 deaths and over 800 injuries. “Parliamentarians from the Council of Europe, the pan-European organisation standing for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, have a special responsibility to react when the communist regime in China represses its own population.”

“In its Resolution 1621 (2008) on the situation in China, adopted a year ago, the Parliamentary Assembly called on the Chinese authorities to improve their record in respect of human rights and democratic principles. The present tragic events show clearly that no progress has been achieved,” he added.
