06/10/2009 Monitoring
Strasbourg, 06.10.2009 - The co-rapporteurs with respect of Ukraine of the Monitoring Committee of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), Renate Wohlwend (Liechtenstein, EPP/CD) and Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger (Germany, ALDE), today expressed their concern about the ruling of the Court of the Pecherskyi district in Kyiv that forbids the publication or distribution by “any individual or legal entity” of any “unfair advertising” concerning the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
”Especially in the context of the forthcoming Presidential election in , such a decision could easily be seen as censorship and meddling of the courts in the election campaign and political debate, which would be unacceptable”, the co-rapporteurs said.
The Assembly will send a 40 member delegation to observe the forthcoming Presidential election, as well as a 11 member pre-election mission in November 2009 to assess the election campaign as well as the political climate in the run up to the election.
