19/03/2010 Monitoring
Strasbourg, 19.03.2010 – Andreas Gross (Switzerland, SOC) and György Frunda (Romania, EPP/CD), the new co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Russia, will make their first visit to the country from 22 to 24 March 2010 to assess the state of Russia’s honouring of its obligations and commitments to the Council of Europe.
In Moscow, they will hold an exchange of views with the Russian authorities and political forces on this question, and make a preliminary political evaluation of the situation. They are due to meet the Speaker of the State Duma, the Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice, the Prosecutor-General and the Russian President’s envoy to the North Caucasus, as well as representatives of civil society.
Russia is one of ten Council of Europe member states currently subject to the Assembly’s monitoring procedure, which involves regular dialogue with a country’s authorities and periodic assessments by the Assembly. The last public assessment of the situation in Russia was in March 2009.
