PACE President expresses support for Montenegro’s EU bid

Strasbourg, 19.05.2010 – On the last day of his official visit to Montenegro (16-19 May 2010), PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu met the Prime Miner of Montenegro Milo Dukanovic, when he reiterated his appreciation for the progress achieved by Montenegro in implementing the obligations and commitments it took on when it joined the Council of Europe in 2007. He also expressed his support for the country's efforts to join the European Union and Euro-Atlantic structures as fully and quickly as possible.

“Besides this progress, which has already been achieved, I was very pleased that we fully agreed on the necessity to continue and intensify democratic reforms, in particular with a view to reinforcing both the institutional and budgetary position of the Parliament, strengthening the rule of law and further improving the participation of ethnic minorities in the political and social life of the country,” the President said.

Finally, he encouraged the authorities to continue their fruitful co-operation with the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission, and stressed the need to adopt the new law on the elections to the Parliament as soon as possible.

During his visit, he also met the President of the Republic Filip Vujanovic, the President of the Parliament Ranko Krivokapic and the Foreign Affairs Miner Milan Rocen, as well as the leaders of political groups and Montenegro’s delegation to PACE. Mr Çavusoglu also addressed the Parliament of Montenegro.
