24/11/2010 Election observation
Strasbourg, 24.11.2010 – A 27-member delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Indrek Saar (Estonia, SOC), will be in Moldova from 26 to 29 November to observe the holding of the early parliamentary elections, alongside observers from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the European Parliament and the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR).
The delegation will be meeting the representatives of the main political parties standing for the elections, the Central Electoral Commission, as well as representatives of civil society and the media, before observing the polling on 28 November.
A PACE pre-electoral delegation visiting Chisinau on 26-27 October had noted with satisfaction the confidence of political stakeholders in the transparent functioning of the Central Election Commission. It also welcomed the improvement in media coverage of the election campaign. However, the delegation also underlined a number of concerns, in particular regarding the quality of the voters’ lists, and the lack of transparency in the financing of the election campaign. It stressed “the crucial importance of these early parliamentary elections, the results of which should allow, at last, the formation of functional state institutions, in conformity with the Constitution”.
