PACE rapporteur dismayed about sentence to death by military court in northern West Bank

Strasbourg, 12.10.2011 - Renate Wohlwend (Liechtenstein, EPP/CD), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on abolition of the death penalty, expressed her dismay after a military court in the northern West Bank has sentenced a former member of the Presidential Guard to death.

“Last week in Strasbourg, the Parliamentary Assembly adopted a resolution to grant the Palestinian National Council ‘Partner for Democracy’ status, including the expectation that it will go beyond the de facto moratorium on executions established in the West Bank since 2005 and abolish the death penalty outright,” she recalled today. “The death penalty is an unacceptable violation of human rights, no matter what the crime,” she said.
