Jean-Claude Mignon: 'The slaughter in Syria must cease immediately'

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, yesterday unreservedly condemned the repression and massacres perpetrated by the Syrian regime, and sent out a fervent appeal to the UN Security Council to take the requisite steps to put an end to the repression.

“The situation in Syria has become intolerable, and urgent action is needed. We are appalled by the atrocities committed by the Syrian regime. It is vital that we have a resolution condemning this bloody repression and calling for immediate democratic transition in Damascus, as well as imposing sanctions in the event of non-compliance with the demands of the international community”, said the President of the PACE.

Jean-Claude Mignon appealed to Council of Europe member States which are also members of the UN Security Council to adopt such a resolution in order to support the Arab League’s efforts to achieve a settlement, putting an end to ten months of inaction on Syria.

He concluded: “the authorities must put an immediate end to the bloodshed and to all human rights abuses and violations. This situation must cease, and we must all act together to stop the intolerable violence and to call to account those responsible for it. The time has come to allow the Syrian people to express their democratic aspirations freely”.
