Strasbourg, 24.02.2012 – Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), will be meeting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon in New York on 29 February. Their talks will focus primarily on co-operation between the two organisations in crisis management in the world and on promoting democracy and human rights.

On the same day, Mr Mignon will attend a parliamentary meeting on “Empowering rural women: what role for parliaments?”, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and UN Women – the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women – on the occasion of the 56th session of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women.

On 27 February, Mr Mignon will attend a side-event of the session focusing on the prevention of violence against women through the implementation of international standards. This event is being jointly organised by the Council of Europe, UN Women and the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the United Nations.

There will also be meetings with Michelle Bachelet, Under-Secretary General of the UN for gender equality and the empowerment of women, Lynn Pascoe, Under-Secretary General of the UN for political affairs, and with ambassadors of PACE member states, observers and partners.
