Strasbourg, 26.02.2013 – Speaking yesterday in the Romanian parliament, Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), welcomed “Romania’s contribution to stability in the region”. Referring to last summer’s political crisis, the President said he was pleased that the country had managed to settle its differences peacefully, seeing this as a “sign of democratic maturity” which he had “never doubted”.
With regard to Romania’s work on the statute of parliamentarians, Jean-Claude Mignon expressed PACE’s willingness to assist, saying “I have told the President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament that the PACE would be happy to co-operate on preparing amendments”.
Before reporting on his first year as president, Jean-Claude Mignon also heartily commended Romania on its handling of the national minorities issue and welcomed the “positive developments concerning Romania’s relations with the European Court of Human Rights”.
