PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon strongly condemned the terrorist attack in the railway station in Volgograd today, which left some 15 people dead and many wounded. «This new act of extreme violence in Volgograd against innocent people who were peacefully on their way to celebrate New Year with their families and friends, only two months after a similar explosion shook the same city can in no way be justified and is contrary to the values and principles of the Council of Europe – or to any values of mankind at all”, he said.
“I am deeply saddened to have to once again extend my sincerest condolences to the bereaving families and to the Russian authorities, especially during this season of well-wishing and joy. I can but reassure the continuing support of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to the Russian Federation in its fight against terrorism, notably ahead of the forthcoming Sochi Winter Olympic Games”, he added.
