President welcomes the agreement for a resolution of the crisis in Ukraine

“I welcome the agreement reached yesterday in Geneva between the United States, Russia, the European Union and Ukraine to obtain a de-escalation of tensions in Ukraine," today said Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). "The agreement, reached with the responsible attitude shown by negotiators, is a positive step after the recent deterioration of the situation and gives hope for a lull in the rising tensions in the coming days."

Ms. Brasseur added that the Ukrainian authorities now needed to be supported in their efforts to implement the agreement, which includes, in particular, the disarmament of illegal armed groups currently active in Ukraine, the evacuation of occupied buildings and the end of violent or provocative actions by all participants.

In its resolution adopted on 9 April, the Parliamentary Assembly expressed its deep concern at the risk of destabilisation of the whole region, by further Russian military aggression against Ukraine and recommended to “explore the possibility for tangible security agreements to ensure Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
