Ukraine: PACE co-rapporteurs express their support for renewed peace negotiations

The co-rapporteurs of the Monitoring Committee for Ukraine, Mailis Reps (Estonia, ALDE) and Jean-Claude Mignon (France, EPP/CD) deeply deplore the escalating violence and resulting civil casualties in Eastern Ukraine and therefore fully support the German-French efforts to re-establish a cease fire.

“We strongly welcome any new peace initiative that is based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the principles agreed upon in Minsk in September 2014. The current initiative of the German Chancellor and French President provides a good, but perhaps also last, chance to resolve the conflict that is threatening the European stability”, said the co-rapporteurs. In addition, they called upon all parties to the conflict, and in particular Russia, to come to a lasting comprehensive agreement on how to end the conflict at today’s summit in Minsk.

With regard to the escalation in violence and fighting in Eastern Ukraine over the recent weeks, the rapporteurs recalled the Assembly Resolution on “the humanitarian situation of Ukrainian refugees and displaced persons”, adopted in January 2015, in which the Assembly called on all parties in the conflict to take the necessary measures to end the violence and to fully ensure the protection of civilians and displaced persons in Ukraine.

The co-rapporteurs intend to visit Ukraine from 25 to 27 March 2015.
