“Strengthening democracy in Europe should be coupled with resolute efforts to fight corruption, including at the highest levels”, said Drago Kos, Chairperson of the OECD Working Group on Bribery, speaking at a meeting of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy, on 8 March 2016, in Paris.
“We should do more to avoid a two-speed Europe, with some countries having advanced anti-corruption regulations and specialised anti-corruption bodies, while others are still lagging behind, including in the ‘old’ Europe”, he stressed, arguing that a right balance had to be found between prevention and repressive measures.
The Committee also examined an information note prepared by Michele Nicoletti (Italy, SOC), on his recent fact-finding visit to Ukraine (19-20 January 2016), in the framework of the preparation of his report on Corruption as governance regime: a barrier to institutional efficiency and progress.
