PACE’s rapporteur on the situation in the Middle East, Dora Bakoyannis (Greece, SOC), has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
"The ceasefire agreement marks a crucial development in the ongoing efforts for peace in the region. This agreement, mediated by key international actors, brings a very welcome pause to 15 months of humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, offering much-needed relief to its people,” she said.
“This agreement finally brings hope for hostages and their families. The planned surge in humanitarian aid is vital for addressing the immense human suffering caused by this conflict. While this ceasefire provides welcome respite, it must be seen as a first fragile step in a long-term process aimed at addressing the root causes of the crisis.
All parties involved must uphold their commitments to ensure the agreement holds, paving the way for further dialogue, reconciliation, and humanitarian efforts. The international community must remain steadfast in supporting initiatives that encourage co-operation, peacebuilding, and development.
The Parliamentary Assembly remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual respect, recognising that lasting solutions will require sustained effort and collaboration from all stakeholders.”
