Angelo Farrugia: ‘Let’s make Malta’s Presidency more than a formality’

Angelo Farrugia, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta

Malta’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers “will be a voice for dialogue, but not at the expense of justice. A host to all, but never neutral in the face of suffering. A builder of bridges, but never an observer of the erosion of human rights,” said Angelo Farrugia, Speaker of the Maltese House of Representatives, addressing the PACE Standing Committee in Valletta today.

“Solidarity with Ukraine, solidarity with Gaza, reinforcing democracy, protecting children, combating discrimination, promoting equality and preserving the European Convention human rights system will be our compass from the heart of the Mediterranean. We offer not only geography, but also a moral geography,” Mr Farrugia added.

“We offer the weight of history, the wisdom of survival and the hope of solidarity. We offer our record; we offer our reform. We offer our conviction, but we also offer our resilience. We invite you as parliamentarians to join us in making this Presidency more than a formality. Let it be a turning point, a chapter of reflection and reform,” he concluded.
