Resolution 395 (1969)

Author(s):
Parliamentary Assembly
Origin
Assembly debate on 27 January 1969 (20th Sitting) (see Doc. 2514, report of the Committee on Agriculture). Text adopted by the Assembly on 27 January 1969 (20th Sitting).

The Assembly,

1. Having taken note of the 5th report presented to the Council of Europe by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), including the Appendices concerning the Codex Alimentarius and selected aspects of FAO fisheries activities ;
2. Welcoming the improvement in the world food situation, in particular the proportion of this improvement stemming from the greater emphasis placed on agricultural production in the developing countries, hopes that the encouragement for further development thus obtained may lead to increased production in those branches of agriculture where it can be of lasting benefit :
3. Concerned about the unsatisfactory development of trade in agricultural products and the resulting strain on foreign exchange earnings of the developing countries, considers that more generous import policies in the developed countries should constitute an integral part of the efforts to encourage agricultural production in the developing countries in those fields where they are most competitive ;
4. Welcoming and fully endorsing the selection by FAO of the five specific areas for concentrated effort - namely the work of high-yielding varieties of basic food crops, the filling of the protein gap, the war on waste, the mobilisation of human resources for rural development, and the earning and saving of foreign exchange - hopes that the distribution problem encountered in many developing countries will also receive appropriate attention ;
5. Recalling its appreciation of the FAO co-operative programmes, the FAO/ IBRD Co-operative Programme and the FAO/ Industry Co-operative Programme, again stresses the need, in assistance provided to encourage agricultural development, for closer co-ordination between bilateral programmes and multilateral organisations in correlation with the efforts made by the developing countries ;
6. Thanking FAO for the detailed review of its work in Europe, hopes that the excellent co-operation between FAO and the Council of Europe will further develop in all fields of common interest, including that of the protection of physical environment and resources.
