Contribution of the Council of Europe to the International Year for Human Rights in 1968

The Assembly,
1. Considering
Resolution 2081 (XX) of the General Assembly of the United Nations concerning the organisation in 1968 of the International Year for Human Rights ;
2. Considering that this Resolution calls upon regional intergovernmental organisations to intensify efforts and undertakings in the field of human rights, including an international review of achievements in this field, and invites their co-operation and participation in the programme with a view to making the celebration successful and meaningful ;
3. Considering its
Recommendation 458 in which various proposals are made for the participation of the Council of Europe in the International Year for Human Rights,
4. Resolves to hold a Special Sitting of the Assembly at a date to be determined in 1968, as a suitable ceremony to mark the Assembly's support for the International Human Rights Year, at which the theme of the discussions will be the implementation in Europe of the Universal Declaration and of other conventions and declarations of the United Nations and Specialised Agencies in favour of human rights and fundamental freedoms ;
5. Invites the United Nations to participate, in a manner to be agreed, in this Special Sitting ;
6. Instructs the Legal Committee to submit more detailed proposals on this subject to the Bureau of the Assembly ;
7. Instructs the Bureau to take any necessary decisions in due course after receiving the proposals of the Legal Committee.
