IV. Activities and experience in the field of human rights
As soon as I started law studies, I became a member of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group that was led by prominent dissident (Mr Viktoras Petkus). The Lithuanian Helsinki Group monitors human rights violations, makes public statements and surveys on the situation of human rights and freedoms. The Lithuanian Helsinki Group has helped me to establish contacts across Europe with other Helsinki Group members, prominent human rights activists and organisations, to participate in conferences and seminars devoted to human rights. From my side, I started drafting the Lithuanian Helsinki Group’s public statements and surveys, helped to monitor human rights violations in Lithuania.
After graduating I started to work professionally in the field of human rights by teaching at International and European Union Law Department, Mykolas Romeris University. In addition, I started to work as a lawyer and since 2003 as an advocate. Professor's work at the University and advocate’s practice supplemented each other: theoretical knowledge of the law of the European Union, the documents of the Council of Europe allowed to detect violations of human rights and freedoms and to protect properly the rights and legitimate interests of individuals. Obviously, protection of human rights and freedoms and related court cases is a very important part of my legal practice as advocate.
My special scholar interest lies with the relationship between the EU law and the Convention. I devote part of my legal research to comparably novel question of the level of protection of human rights (and the application of the Convention) in competition cases as well as to the question of the EU future membership to the Convention.
