15/11/2024 Monitoring
Eerik-Niiles Kross (Estonia, ALDE) and George Papandreou (Greece, SOC), co-rapporteurs for the honouring of Council of Europe obligations and commitments by Hungary, are to make a fact-finding visit to the country from 18-20 November.
Hungary is one of ten countries currently subject to the full monitoring procedure of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which aims to help them fulfil their promises to uphold the highest democratic and human rights standards.
In Budapest, the co-rapporteurs are due to meet a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and a Deputy Justice Minister, the Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly, members of the parliamentary committee on national minorities, the head of the Office for the Protection of Sovereignty, as well as representatives of political parties and NGOs, among others.
The Assembly’s monitoring procedure involves regular visits by a pair of rapporteurs, who conduct an ongoing dialogue with authorities, and occasional plenary debates to ensure that a state's progress and problems are honestly assessed. The next plenary debate on the monitoring of Hungary is due in the second half of 2025.
