The Assembly,
1. Having regard to
Recommendation 798 (1977), on the conservation of the living resources of the seas, and to
Resolution 645 (1977), on the organisation of a colloquy on the conservation of the living resources of the seas, both dealing with the North-East Atlantic and the North Sea ;
2. Having regard to the fact that the Mediterranean presents similar problems with regard to the utilisation and conservation of its living resources ;
3. Being of the opinion that these problems, which are particularly related to overfishing, but also to the special situation of the Mediterranean as a closed sea with only a few affluent rivers, and with a continuous net loss of nutrients and an increasing salinity, merit examination together with those of the North-East Atlantic and the North Sea ;
4. Considering that the establishment of the 200-mile economic zone poses specific problems to a sea of relatively reduced surface such as the Mediterranean ;
5. Having regard to the convention signed in Barcelona on 16 February 1976 by the majority of the Mediterranean countries, concerning in particular environment protection,
6. Resolves to include the Mediterranean in its discussions when organising, in October 1977, a colloquy with representatives of science, the fishing industry, governmental authorities and competent international organisations, to review the situation as regards the conservation of the living resources of the sea.
