Asking Germany and Spain about addressing corruption cases and demanding accountability

Written question No. 761 to the Committee of Ministers | Doc. 15278 | 30 April 2021

Signatories:
Ms Laura CASTEL, Spain, NR

In 2017 and 2018, some members of the German and Spanish delegations to the Parliamentary Assembly were investigated by the Council of Europe for corruption and taking bribes from representatives of the Azerbaijani authorities, provided in exchange for a vote loyal to the interests of the Azerbaijani authorities.

The corruption of the Azerbaijani authorities has had serious consequences both within the country itself – the persecution of human rights defenders, journalists and the repression of the political opposition – and elsewhere in Europe, with several parliamentarians implicated in corruption cases, revealed by ongoing judicial investigations.

Ms Castel

To ask the Committee of Ministers:

What specific steps have Germany and Spain taken to address these corruption cases? What accountability has there been as a result?
