In its Resolution 46 of 26th May, 1954, the Assembly expressed the wish that the whole Saar question should be re-examined during the present part of the 1954 Session, particularly as regards the action taken on Recommendation 57 (1953) concerning the drafting of the future European Statute of the Saar.
The Committee on General Affairs has observed that this action has led to some notable measures on the part of the Governments concerned, particularly the talks between Chancellor Adenauer for the German Federal Republic and M. Teitgen, at that time Deputy Prime Minister of France, held in Strasbourg on 19th and 20th May, 1954. A complete agreement has not yet, however, been reached.
A Conference of the Powers mentioned in Recommendation 57 has been announced, with the object of considering the general problems of Franco-German reconciliation, in which the settlement of the Saar question is an essential factor.
For this reason your Committee proposes that Item 4 of the present agenda of the Assembly should be examined during the Third Part of its Sixth Session, to be held in the near future, in order to enable the Committee to present a Report on all the steps taken to give effect to Recommendation 57.
