PACE rapporteur raises concerns over proposed changes to whistle-blower protections in the Slovak Republic

“I am concerned by the legislative proposals that are currently being considered under an expedited procedure in the Slovak parliament, which would affect the protection of whistle-blowers,” said Anna-Kristiina Mikkonen (Finland, SOC), rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Ensuring better protection of whistle-blowers in Europe.

“An analysis by the European Chief Prosecutor concluded that the proposed legislation would restrict whistle-blower protection for several categories of persons, and that the draft law contains several elements which cannot be reconciled with respect for the principles of the rule of law as laid down in the EU Conditionality Regulation.”

“Whistle-blowers provide great benefits to our societies, whilst exposing themselves to enormous personal risk. I call on the Slovak authorities to make sure that any new draft legislation upholds international standards for the protection of whistle-blowers, including the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers' Recommendation on protecting whistleblowers and the EU’s Whistleblowing Directive."
