04/11/2025 Equality and Non-Discrimination
On the eve of International Romani Language Day (5 November), Georgios Stamatis (Greece, EPP/CD), PACE General Rapporteur on Roma and Travellers, made the following statement:
“On 5 November, we mark International Romani Language Day as an opportunity to honour the Romani language and culture, to advance the well-being of Roma communities, and to reaffirm that every language is a vital component of Europe’s shared heritage.
The Romani language is an essential pillar of European linguistic and cultural diversity. Like every language, it embodies history, identity and belonging. By safeguarding and promoting Romani, we contribute directly to the visibility and social inclusion of Roma people, strengthening their ability to participate fully in society and to live with dignity and equality.
Yet, this language faces specific challenges, including historical marginalisation, limited institutional support and the risk of language erosion. These realities call for renewed attention and commitment.
I call on all member States to reaffirm the value of linguistic diversity as a foundation of democratic life and to take concrete measures to preserve and promote the Romani language. By doing so, we enrich our common European identity and build a continent where all languages and all communities are equally valued and visible.”
