PACE today called on Council of Europe member states to co-ordinate their efforts to combat global warming at european and world level, and cover this issue in their sectoral policies, with a view to averting risks of flooding and drought.
It also urged them to commit themselves firmly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, setting a 20-30 % drop in CO2 emissions by 2020 as the target, reduce deforestation and use renewable energy.
In his report to the Assembly, Alan Meale (United Kingdom, SOC) pointed out that ecological disasters caused by climate warming were becoming increasingly frequent. "Europe will not be spared this phenomenon," he declared, "and any delay in taking the necessary action at european and world level may well increase the dangers and prove far more costly in the long run."
