Strasbourg, 01.04.2010 – The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is to jointly organise, with the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), an international parliamentary conference on “The future of European security” in St Petersburg on 8 April 2010.
PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu will join Sergey Mironov, Chair of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, to introduce the event, which will focus on the legal bases for future European security and the concept of “soft security”.
Mr Çavusoglu will also address a parallel conference on the previous day, taking place on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and will hold a series of bilateral meetings with Mr Mironov, head of Russia’s Federation Council, the Speaker of the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn and the Speaker of the upper chamber of the Belarus Parliament Boris Batuna, among others.
Also on 7 April, two PACE sub-committees, those dealing with external relations and with conflict prevention through dialogue and reconciliation, will meet with the relevant committees of the Interparliamentary Assembly and the European Security and Defence Assembly. Topics for discussion include the parliamentary contribution to conflict prevention and piracy at sea.

The conference on the future of European security takes place on 8 April from 11am-1pm and 2.30pm to 6.30pm in the Duma Hall of the Tavrichesky Palace, St Petersburg.
