11/03/2011 Standing Committee
There are “numerous and serious” risks linked to the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture, including many uncertainties about the transfer of genetic material, but they could also, to a certain extent, provide a means of combating famine and the food crisis, PACE’s Standing Committee has said.
In a resolution based on a report by Jean-Francois Le Grand (France, EPP/CD), the parliamentarians said genetic engineering technology should be used “responsibly and appropriately” and called for traceability and labelling of GMO products, regulations on good practice, and independent and transparent studies into risks. EU states should be free to decide whether or not to cultivate GMO crops, they added.
