03/04/2012 President
Strasbourg, 03.04.2012 – In his meetings today in Chisinau with senior Moldovan officials, Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), welcomed the end of the political deadlock in which the country has been immersed for three years and called on all those involved in Moldovan politics to look to the future constructively.
“I have conveyed to the President of the Republic, Mr Timofti, my wishes for his success. His election marks a new start in Moldovan political life. In this context, all players must now show responsibility by accepting the democratic legitimacy of institutions, in particular the legitimacy of a president elected in accordance with constitutional requirements,” he said.
Mr Mignon encouraged the country’s political forces to “find the best ways of working together in order to pursue the reform process”, including revision of the constitution, and called on the authorities to continue to make use of the expertise of the Venice Commission in the drafting of legal reforms.
“You can count on our full support in your efforts towards European integration. In this regard, progress in the honouring of the obligations and commitments entered into by the Republic of Moldova in the context of the Council of Europe is the best way of speeding up this integration process,” he said.
Mr Mignon welcomed the drawing up of a draft action plan on compliance by the Republic of Moldova with its commitments vis-à-vis the Council of Europe, which is shortly due to be approved by the Moldovan authorities.
During his official visit to the Republic of Moldova from 2 to 5 April 2012, the PACE President met with the President of the Republic Nicolae Timofti, the Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca, as well as the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov. Talks are also scheduled this afternoon with leaders of political parties represented in Parliament and with the Moldovan delegation to PACE.
Tomorrow, 4 April, Mr Mignon will visit the Transnistrian region.
