Better ways to help refugees find work

Many Council of Europe member states grant refugees the right to work, seeing it as beneficial to host societies, but a gap remains between the legal right and its practical application, according to PACE’s Migration Committee.

Approving a report by Christopher Chope (United Kingdom, EDG), the committee said administrative and practical barriers to refugees working – such as restrictions on work permits – should be reduced. Language classes and job-finding courses would also help. Meanwhile, asylum seekers should also have the chance to work if there is to be any delay in dealing with their asylum applications.
