Egypt ready to strengthen cooperation with the Council of Europe

After a three-day visit to Cairo from 5 to 7 December as PACE rapporteur on the political transition in Egypt for the Political Affairs Committee, Jordi Xuclà (Spain, ALDE) declared that he had observed the will of the Egyptian Parliament and government to strengthen cooperation with the Council of Europe.

“We have a long way to go, working together with a view to achieve the complete fulfilment of the standards of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Egypt is going through an unprecedented transition, which has to be seen in the context of its key role for the stability of the region and of its evolution towards a consolidated democratic system,” he concluded.

During his visit, Mr Xuclà met the Minister of Legal Affairs, Chairpersons of various parliamentary committees, representatives of political parties, the President of the National Council for Women, religious leaders, as well as representatives of the diplomatic community, socio-economic and financial bodies, civil society and the media.
