21/06/2018 President
Michele Nicoletti, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), today expressed his deep regret at the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
“I was very disappointed to learn that the United States has decided to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council. For more than 70 years, since the UN Charter was signed in San Francisco and the organisation’s headquarters established in New York, US diplomacy has led the way in promoting human rights amongst the international community, using the UN’s multilateral fora to pursue this agenda. Today, we need multilateral organisations more than ever. A stable, rules-based international order based on shared values, such as respect for human rights, can only be maintained through this kind of co-operation and dialogue.
The Parliamentary Assembly will continue to support and co-operate with the United Nations and its institutions in their shared mission of promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law. I hope that in time, the United States will renew its engagement with the Human Rights Council, resuming its historical role as a leading member of multilateral international institutions.”
