Liliane Maury Pasquier, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), will participate in a panel discussion on the theme “Take a stand: say no to sexism and harassment", on 21 September in London.
During this event, organised by “Peace One Day” on the occasion of the International Day of Peace, discussions will concentrate on the extent of sexism and harassment against women, with a particular focus on solutions and good practices.
“Women, especially those in politics, the media and sport, or simply in the workplace, regularly experience sexism, harassment, intimidation and physical and online violence,” President Maury Pasquier said.
“This phenomenon, which has been tolerated and normalised for far too long, has a chilling effect on women's willingness to participate in political and public life at all levels. It is time for this to stop,” she added, stressing that equal participation of women and men in all aspects of our societies was a condition for social justice, peace and cohesion.
Other participants in the panel discussion include Patricia Scotland, Secretary General of the Commonwealth; Will Gardner, Chief Executive Officer of the NGO Childnet; Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, lawyer and women’s rights activist; and Jan Zijderveld, Chief Executive Officer of the Avon Foundation for Women.
In 2018, PACE launched an initative to counter sexist behaviour and harassment against women in parliaments, #NotInMyParliament.
