The Council of Europe and the OECD must "work in concert" to offer the real prospect of a democratic and prosperous future - in the context of sustainable development - to the citizens of their member states, according to PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier.
Addressing a meeting of the OECD's Global Parliamentary Network today in Paris, the President said the UN's Sustainable Development Goals must be “at the heart of the discussion”, and praised the UN's 2030 Agenda for its focus on human rights and good governance.
She highlighted the Council of Europe's 225 conventions - many of them open to OECD countries - as a good baseline for global standard-setting, and recalled a number of recent Assembly initiatives to encourage implementation of the SDGs, including the #NotInMyParliament initiative, aimed at ending sexism and harassment in parliaments.
On developments in Artificial Intelligence, the President underlined that industry self-regulation alone would not suffice, and that a universal standard-setting framework, based on Council of Europe standards, was essential. The Assembly would soon be holding a joint debate on several different aspects of AI, she pointed out.
The President met OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría on the margins of the meeting.
