PACE co-rapporteurs make periodic review visit to the Netherlands

The Hague / Senate and Government buildings

Titus Corlăţean (Romania, SOC) and Stéphanie Krisper (Austria, ALDE), co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the periodic review of the Netherlands, will carry out a fact-finding visit to the country on 18 and 19 April 2023 to assess how far it is honouring its Council of Europe membership obligations.

In The Hague, they are due to meet the President of the Senate and members of both chambers of the Dutch Parliament, officials from the Interior and Justice Ministries, as well as the head of the Dutch Media Authority, the Ombudsman and National Co-ordinators on Racism and Discrimination.

In the legal field, they are due to meet representatives of the Council of State, the Council for the Judiciary and the Netherlands Bar. There will also be meetings with representatives of civil society and EU diplomats.

"Periodic review" is an assessment of whether a state is fulfilling its obligation to uphold the Council of Europe's human rights and democratic standards, and applies to all member States that are not under a full monitoring procedure (11 states) or engaged in “post-monitoring dialogue” (3 states).

The 46-nation Council of Europe, of which the Netherlands was a founder member, is separate from the European Union.
