Artificial intelligence, freedom of expression and disinformation: challenges and risks for democracy

Round table on AI

Organised by the PACE Interparliamentary Co-operation and Project Support Division in co-operation with the Latvian delegation to PACE, a Round Table on ‘Artificial intelligence, freedom of expression and disinformation: challenges and risks for democracy’ took place today after the Standing Committee meeting in Riga.

The Round Table aimed at raising the visibility of work by the Council of Europe and PACE on artificial intelligence standards, freedom of expression and disinformation; contributing to the on-going work by the Council of Europe Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) to elaborate a framework Convention on the development, design and application of artificial intelligence; and facilitating discussions and networking with stakeholders, and defining take-away actions to make progress in this regard.

Speakers included PACE President Tiny Kox; Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Chairperson of the Latvian delegation to PACE; Gundars Bergmanis-Korāts, Principal Scientist at the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence in Riga; Gregor Strojin, CAI Vice-Chair; Kaspars Kauliņš, International Business Development Director, Tilde; Jānis Kārkliņš, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Latvia to the Council of Europe; and Louise Barton, Director, Human Dignity and Sustainable Development.
