“I am deeply alarmed by reports of mass killings targeting civilians, especially the Alawite minority and other religious communities, in Syria’s coastal regions,” said Dora Bakoyannis (Greece, EPP/CD), PACE’s rapporteur on the situation in the Middle East. “These atrocities, including the execution of entire families, are grave violations of human rights and risk further inflaming sectarian tensions.”
“The protection of Syria's religious and ethnic minorities must be a priority. Violence based on faith or ethnicity is unacceptable and demands a swift and united response from the international community. The announcement of an independent committee to investigate these crimes is a positive step, but it must act transparently and quickly to hold perpetrators accountable. Justice cannot wait,” she said.
“Syria’s interim authorities have a duty to protect all civilians and must take immediate action to control radical militias and prevent further violence. The international community must also support efforts to protect civilians and promote a peaceful and inclusive Syria,” concluded the rapporteur.
“I stand with the Syrian people in their pursuit of peace, justice, and dignity.”
