Over the years, the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina has built a successful multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-lingual society, said PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, speaking at the end of a visit to the Autonomous Province on 8 March 2011. “I welcome the efforts of the institutions of Vojvodina aiming at promoting integration and supporting minority communities in the fields of education, culture, the use of minority languages and access to the media,” he added.

Addressing today the National Assembly in Belgrade, PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu welcomed Serbia’s contribution to the process of reconciliation in the region. However, “declarations have to be supported by concrete actions aiming, among others, at resolving the issue of missing persons, promoting effective refugee return and, where appropriate, their local integration,” he stressed.

PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu today stressed the need to complete quickly Serbia’s key outstanding commitments and obligations to the Council of Europe. “The reforms should not slow down,” he said, during a press conference in Belgrade. “The Serbian Government and Parliament should intensify efforts to amend the electoral legislation and abolish the so-called ‘party-administered mandates’, strengthen the independence of the judiciary, step up efforts to fight corruption and continue strengthening minority rights."

PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has expressed deepening concern at the plight of refugees and other foreigners currently fleeing or trying to flee from Libya. “The reports now coming out from UNHCR are dramatic. The humanitarian situation is worsening hour after hour. While already over 110 000 persons have fled Libya, more than 1000 persons per hour are fleeing from Libya into Tunisia.”

Some teachers are reinforcing gender stereotypes in their pupils by failing to give boys and girls access to the full range of learning experiences they are entitled to, PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu told a seminar in New York today. Giving the keynote speech at a conference being held by the Council of Europe and Turkey’s Permanent Representation to the UN on the theme Combating Gender Stereotypes in Education, the President said: “Boys and girls are different. But this does not mean that they should not have the same opportunities to develop their full potential.”

PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has strongly condemned the indiscriminate and excessive use of force by the authorities in Libya, and demanded that the human rights of everyone in the country be fully respected. Following meetings in New York with the UN Representatives of several Council of Europe member and observer states, the President said the current situation in the country was deeply disturbing.

PACE stands ready to support democratic transformation in Tunisia, PACE President Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu has told a group of students in London. Addressing students from the London School of Economics, the President recalled the Assembly’s offer of “Partnership for democracy” status for Tunisia’s parliament, which would allow a delegation of its members to take part in Assembly debates, provided the conditions were met.

The Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation) can serve as an example of tolerance and peaceful and prosperous coexistence of cultures and religions for the whole region, said PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, speaking at the end of a two-day visit to the Republic’s capital Kazan (11-12 February 2011). He expressed his appreciation to the President of the Republic and its leadership for their efforts to develop and preserve the cultures and traditions of about 115 nationalities and ethnic groups.
