At the end of his official visit to Moldova (8-10 February), the PACE President Mevlüt Cavusoglu welcomed the willingness of Moldovan political parties to dialogue to solve the political deadlock. “Any solution to overcome the current deadlock concerning the election of the President of Moldova should be based on a large consensus of political forces. It is therefore fundamental for the majority and the opposition to engage, without further delay, in meaningful negotiations and to accept compromises in the interest of the country,” the PACE President said today.

PACE President, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, is to make an official visit to Moldova on 8-9 February. During his visit, he will meet the Acting President of the Republic and Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu, Prime Minister Vlad Filat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leancă, as well as the different political forces represented in parliament.

"All forms of intolerance towards those considered 'different' are on the rise again. Ethnic, religious or cultural differences between people are being artificially exacerbated and manipulated in political discourse, to divert attention from the real problems and real solutions. Politicians and parties reverting to such discourse have now been democratically elected in many national parliaments," warned PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, speaking today in Auschwitz at a ceremony in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

"The European Court of Human Rights today delivered a milestone judgment damning how Europe is protecting its refugees, asylum seekers and irregular migrants,” today said PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. “While the M.S.S. v. Belgium and Greece judgment is only against two member states, the implications of the judgment will be rippling through the capitals of Europe,” he added.

PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu has expressed profound concern at the recent social and economic tension in Tunisia and voiced his regret that protests which have been ongoing since mid-December have degenerated into violent clashes with the police, leading to the deaths of at least 21 people. The President, speaking at the end of an official visit to the country (10-12 January 2011), called on the authorities to “manage the crisis in a responsible manner and in full conformity with Council of Europe standards, in particular avoiding the disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officials”.

PACE President Mevlüt Çavusoglu today encouraged Morocco to pursue its ambitious objective to obtain the newly created PACE status of Partner for Democracy. “This will bring our co-operation to a new level,” he said. Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) President, Mevlüt Çavusoglu, expressed alarm that, on 15 December, Sweden forcibly returned around 20 Iraqi refugees to Iraq, including Christians who are currently the victims of particular persecution in this country. “I am concerned since this is not the first time that Sweden has forcibly sent back refugees to Iraq”.
