PACE to observe parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan

A PACE pre-electoral delegation visited Sarajevo and Banja Luka in order to evaluate the political and campaign environment in the run-up to the general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 3 October 2010. The delegation met representatives of the main political forces participating in the elections, the Central Election Commission and the Communication Regulatory Agency, as well as representatives of the international community and NGO activists.

Low turnout of the Constitutional Referendum in Moldova

A PACE delegation has observed the constitutional referendum in Moldova on 5 September. It was the only European parliamentary organisation to observe this referendum. The delegation considered that the voting day was calm and orderly. The citizens who participated in the referendum could in general make their choice freely. However, this delegation regrets the low turnout.

A 15-member PACE delegation, led by Egidijius Vareikis (Lithuania, EPP/CD), will be in Moldova from 3 to 6 September to observe the referendum on the choice of the presidential election procedure. It is the only European parliamentary organisation which will be present in the country to carry out this observation. The electorate will be asked to vote on the proposed amendment to Article 78 of the Constitution and the introduction of the direct election of the President of the Republic.

Run-off confirms that Ukraine's presidential election meets most international commitments

Ukraine's run-off presidential election confirmed the international election observation mission's assessment that the electoral process met most OSCE and Council of Europe commitments. In a statement issued today, the observers noted that the election consolidated progress achieved since 2004. "Some say the Orange Revolution has failed. I say no. Thanks to the Orange Revolution, democratic elections in Ukraine are now a reality," said Matyas Eörsi, Head of PACE delegation.

A 30-member PACE delegation, led by Mátyás Eörsi (Hungary, ALDE), will be in Ukraine from 5 to 8 February to observe the second round of the presidential election, alongside observers from the OSCE and NATO Parliamentary Assemblies, the European Parliament and the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). The delegation will meet the two candidates, the head of the election observation mission of OSCE/ODIHR and her team, the Central Electoral Commission and civil society and media representatives before observing the ballot on 7 February in a sample of polling stations across the country.
