Jean-Claude Mignon, meeting the President of the UN General Assembly, calls for more co-operation

PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon today held talks with the President of the UN General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser during a meeting in Strasbourg. Referring to the crisis in Syria and the Arab Spring, the two Presidents underlined the need for stronger dialogue and co-operation between the UN and the Council of Europe, especially when it comes to dealing with international crises.

In a statement to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon has said there can be no democracy without respect for women’s rights. He launched a message of support and encouragement to all women living in the new democracies emerging from the Arab Spring. “Women, who were on the front line of the uprisings against authoritarian regimes, must also be on the front line when it comes to the running of public institutions, political decision-making, being able to vote and stand for elections,” said Jean-Claude Mignon.

Increased co-operation between the Parliamentary Assembly and the European Parliament was the main focus of meetings held yesterday and today in Strasbourg by the PACE President, Jean-Claude Mignon. During these meetings Jean-Claude Mignon advocated increased reciprocal participation in activities of common interest organised by the two institutions, including joint field visits.
