27/03/2012 President
Strasbourg, 27.03.2012 - The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Jean-Claude Mignon, today offered his congratulations to Macky Sall, President-elect of the Republic of Senegal.
"I am delighted that the voters of Senegal were able last weekend to express their political will in a calm atmosphere, and that the election result has been accepted by all the candidates. These elections represent a good example to the whole region of a democratic transition, and all the political forces should now continue along the constructive path of reform, with a view to even greater consolidation of the country's democratic institutions", said the President of the Assembly.
In this context, Jean-Claude Mignon expressed the hope that the international observers' conclusions would bring to the fore practical ideas and proposals for continued reform, so that international expertise is used to the full.
"As you know, the Council of Europe, which today encompasses 47 member states and 800 million European citizens, has a very wide range of experience in the field of democratic change, and this international experience is now at your disposal as you seek the solutions most appropriate to the Senegalese context", concluded the Assembly President.
