The Assembly,

1. Having regard to the opinion of its Committee on Regional Planning and Local Authorities concerning OECD's activities in connection with the environment, road research and urban management (Doc. 4429), as well as the same Committee's opinion on the activities of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (Doc. 4409) ;

2. Considering that the development of motor vehicles as a means of transport affects the rural and urban environment, and that road planning is a key factor in regional planning policy,

3. Instructs its Committee on Regional Planning and Local Authorities to organise a public parliamentary hearing on "Cars and the environment" in association with the Joint European Committee on Scientific Co-operation of the Committee on Science and Technology, and to report to it on this matter in due time.
