Reacting to the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize award announced today, Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) President Theodoros Rousopoulos made the following statement:

“I warmly congratulate María Corina Machado on being awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Just a year ago, our Assembly honoured her with the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize for her tireless struggle for democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela. At that time, she dedicated the award to the millions of Venezuelans who, every day, embody the values and ideas of Václav Havel.

Today’s Nobel Prize is a powerful recognition not only of her personal courage and resolve but also of the collective will of the Venezuelan people to live in freedom and dignity.

María Corina Machado’s voice has never wavered in the face of persecution, intimidation or exile. Her work – as co-founder of the citizens’ rights organisation Súmate, as a parliamentarian, and as the leader of Vente Venezuela – continues to inspire those who defend democracy across the world.

On behalf of the Parliamentary Assembly, I express our deepest admiration and support for Ms Machado, and for all Venezuelans who remain committed to a peaceful, democratic future for their country.”
