“I am very worried by the 21 April 2015 decision of Indonesia’s Supreme Court to refuse the final appeal of Serge Atlaoui. This French citizen, condemned to death for drug trafficking in 2005, has consistently declared his innocence,” said Marietta Karamanli (France, SOC), General Rapporteur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on abolition of the death penalty.
The General Rapporteur expressed her concern not only at the severity and the disproportionality of the sentence handed down, but also at the clearly expressed will of the Indonesian Government to carry out executions, including of non-citizens.
“I strongly condemn the confirmation of the death penalty decided this week by Indonesia, and I reaffirm that the death penalty is contrary to the values of the Council of Europe and its member states, one of which Mr Atlaoui is a citizen. It is both inhumane and unjustified, and this is why I call on the government of Indonesia to cease its executions.”
