PACE General Rapporteur called on the Hungarian President not to endorse a law banning the organisation of the Pride march

Béatrice FRESKO-ROLFO (Monaco, ALDE)

Today’s adoption by the Hungarian Parliament by accelerated procedure of a law banning the organisation of the Pride march and similar events and prohibiting participation in this type of event, to enter into force at the beginning of April, is an important setback not only for LGBTI rights, but for democracy as a whole and for the protection of freedom of expression and assembly” stated Béatrice Fresko-Rolfo (Monaco, ADLE), PACE General Rapporteur on LGBTI persons.

In its Resolution 2543 (2024) “Freedom of expression and assembly of LGBTI people in Europe”, the Assembly called on Council of Europe member States to support the visibility of LGBTI persons in the public space and to support the organisation of Pride marches and other events to allow the effective exercise of their human rights by LGBTI persons.

The European Court of Human Rights has already affirmed that holding Pride marches does not represent a threat. “Pride marches give very important visibility to the fight for LGBTI rights and in no way infringe upon or endanger the rights of children and families,” Ms Fresko-Rolfo stressed. “I call on the Hungarian President not to endorse this law,” she concluded.
