Assembly debate on 19th September 1963 (11th Sitting) (see Doc. 1660, report of the Committee on Agriculture). Text adopted by the Assembly on 23rd September 1963 (15th Sitting).
The Assembly,
1. Noting the initiative taken by the United Kingdom Government to convene a fisheries conference of Western European countries for the autumn of 1963 ;
2. Considering that the problems of European fisheries urgently require an equitable settlement and that in present circumstances it seems important and desirable, both for economic and social reasons as well as on political grounds, to seek the solution to these problems on the widest possible European basis ;
3. Noting that the proposed agenda of the conference embraces both access to markets and access to fishing grounds, expresses the belief that it is essential to combine these two closely interrelated questions if a rational over-all solution of the fishery problems is to be reached ;
4. Endorses the initiative taken by the United Kingdom and hopes that interested member Governments will act in a co-operative spirit so that the proposed conference can take place and be brought to a successful conclusion.
