Summary

The Parliamentary Assembly marked the 65th anniversary of the European Social Charter, acknowledging its crucial role in fostering social rights as the bedrock of resilient democracies and social justice. Highlighting the vital importance of the revised Charter, the Assembly commended the European Committee of Social Rights for its significant contributions. It urged member States to reinforce their commitment to these rights, emphasising the necessity in light of current pressures and aligning with global initiatives like the European Pillar of Social Rights and UN Sustainable Development Goals. The Assembly encouraged ratification of key protocols, including the Collective Complaints Protocol, to enhance democratic participation and social justice. Emphasising the role of national parliaments, the Assembly called for greater integration of the Charter into legislative processes and facilitated parliamentary oversight in its implementation. It stressed the importance of member States adopting a strategic approach to address social and economic inequalities to maintain democratic stability and urged further efforts to ratify pending protocols and provisions of the Charter to bolster social cohesion.
