The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has issued a resolution condemning the increasing violence and hate speech against politicians, which poses a threat to democracy. The resolution highlights the rise in attacks on politicians across various levels and political affiliations, emphasising the chilling effect such violence has on democratic participation and political diversity. Special attention is given to the disproportionate targeting of women, minorities, and young politicians. The Assembly calls for robust legislation, enhanced protection measures, and cross-party dialogue to combat these threats. It underscores the importance of civic education, media literacy, and transparency to cultivate respect and mutual understanding in society. It also appeals to all politicians to lead by example, abstaining from using inflammatory rhetoric and inciting violence, and supports the No Hate Parliamentary Alliance’s efforts to tackle hate speech.
